The White Hart has an incredible history that is full of names and faces that you may recognise…

Alongside the celebrated 18th century chef William Verrall, who originally owned the hotel from 1737 to 1760 and whose recipe book remains in print today (please do ask to see a copy when you next visit!), the property was frequently visited by Thomas Paine, the notorious revolutionary whose radical policies inspired the American Declaration of Independence. He formed ‘The Headstrong Club’ which met regularly in the hotel which is now our large private dining room that is available for hire with its very own bar. The room overlooks the high street alongside the original balcony.

A haven for locals, families and those coming from further afield, The White Hart oozes character and charm. A beautiful and cosy pub with beautiful rooms, featuring a fantastic bar and large dining room, it’s a place you want to come back to time and time again.

We have 23 gorgeous bedrooms all of which have their own personality and charm. If you’re looking for an extra special place to rest your head, our suites with feature baths and double rainfall shower will tick all the boxes! Accessed from a private covered walkway, our Luxe Rooms are sure to make quite the impression…

Dig into a deliciously seasonal meal, washed down with a refreshing local brew and a comfy chill out in one of the many sumptuous seating areas in the bar and dining areas, the perfect treat for tired feet after a day’s hiking around the South downs. We love to meet your furry four-legged friends too and the treat jar is always stocked! Well behaved dogs are very welcome in our bar, courtyard and a number of our bedrooms. Please let us know if you plan to bring your four legged friend along so we can reserve you a table within a dog friendly area.
