Hello Lewes!
We have officially thrown open our doors, Heartwood Inns third ever pub with rooms, where stylish charm meets a plethora of rich history in the gorgeous Lewes. Our grand opening was truly one for the books, celebrating not only our open but also the rich heritage of the town. Guests were treated to an immersive journey back to the time of Thomas Paine, bringing the historic building to life in a captivating experience.
Upon arrival, visitors were serenaded by the Hamilton singers from the balcony before stepping into the beautifully restored Headstrong room on the first floor. Historical re-enactors welcomed our first guests, sharing the fascinating history of The White Hart and its new chapter as a pub with rooms, while a calligrapher inscribed copies of Common Sense by Thomas Paine with their names.
We proudly highlighted our local partnerships, including a special tasting from our neighbours, Harveys Brewery, served from their charming vintage delivery van parked right outside and we were also joined by Nyetimber offering tastings of their sparkling wines. You can find both behind our bar. Also parading down the high street was a horse drawn carriage, with ‘Thomas Paine’ atop declaring news of the opening to passers by.
The celebration continued with a few words from the Mayor, CEO of Heartwood Collection Richard Ferrier, followed by the ceremonial unveiling of our restored Parliamentary clock. Bill Bruce, of W.F. Bruce Antiques, who was introduced by ‘John Holman’ himself, performed the clock’s first winding. Finally, ‘Thomas Paine’ himself graced the ribbon-cutting ceremony along with the Mayor, officially declaring the pub open!
The day was a roaring success with praise aplenty. We couldn’t be more pleased with our introduction to this fabulous town and even more thrilled to welcome you to The White Hart. We look forward to seeing you all very soon…
